EXTENT OF SELF BUILD
To define self build within my project I began by exploring the extent of self build. I explored this through three precedents which could be categorised into three types of build; SELF BUILD, INCREMENTAL and PREFABRICATED. To understand which would apply best to my scheme, I undertook a swot analysis of each method.
INCREMENTAL:

Walters way was a self build scheme that was based on a timber frame method. This eliminated the need for certain skills and was adaptable to the residents needs.

Quinta Monroy begins with a starter core house with only stairs and utility connection points. There are also modules dedicated for expansion.

WikiHouse is an open source project that digitally designs and prefabricates houses. The components are quick to assemble and require little construction skills.
